Variable response of Red Sea coral communities to recent disturbance events along a latitudinal gradient

چکیده

Coral reefs are experiencing a dramatic loss of hard coral abundance and associated habitat structure from myriad local global factors. Here, utilizing U–Th radiometric age-dating death assemblages, we investigated patterns mortality the eastern margin Red Sea along latitudinal gradient (Yanbu, 24o N; Thuwal, 22o Al-Lith, 19o Farasan Banks, 18o N) in 2018 2019. In all four regions, ages situ dead Acropora Pocillopora colonies were largely confined to late twentieth early twenty-first century. During century, was found be synchronous with previously documented bleaching events 2010 2015 and, at one site (Farasan Banks), an outbreak crown-of-thorns starfish (COTS) 2009. The most northern site, Yanbu, had highest relative percentage live (42 ± 4%) living Acropora, may serve as refugium under climate warming scenarios. For three southern regions (Thuwal, Banks) benthic mostly comprised corals. southernmost survey underwent change COTS 2009 event 2015, lowest (6 2%), massive Porites, no or Pocillopora. Our results highlight asynchronous impact disturbance on emphasize regional differences recovery ecosystem state.

Structure of Benthic Communities along the Taiwan Latitudinal Gradient

The distribution and the structure of benthic assemblages vary with latitude. However, few studies have described benthic communities along large latitudinal gradients, and patterns of variation are not fully understood. Taiwan, lying between 21.90°N and 25.30°N, is located at the center of the Philippine-Japan arc and lies at the northern margin of coral reef development. A wide range of habit...

Extensive phenotypic plasticity of a Red Sea coral over a strong latitudinal temperature gradient suggests limited acclimatization potential to warming

Global warming was reported to cause growth reductions in tropical shallow water corals in both, cooler and warmer, regions of the coral species range. This suggests regional adaptation with less heat-tolerant populations in cooler and more thermo-tolerant populations in warmer regions. Here, we investigated seasonal changes in the in situ metabolic performance of the widely distributed hermaty...

Habitat width along a latitudinal gradient

We use the Chowdhury ecosystem model, one of the most complex agent-based ecological models, to test the latitude-niche breadth hypothesis, with regard to habitat width, i.e., whether tropical species generally have narrower habitats than high latitude ones. Application of the model has given realistic results in previous studies on latitudinal gradients in species diversity and Rapoport's rule...

The response of forest plant regeneration to temperature variation along a latitudinal gradient.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS The response of forest herb regeneration from seed to temperature variations across latitudes was experimentally assessed in order to forecast the likely response of understorey community dynamics to climate warming. METHODS Seeds of two characteristic forest plants (Anemone nemorosa and Milium effusum) were collected in natural populations along a latitudinal gradient fro...

Ecosystem-Wide Morphological Structure of Leaf-Litter Ant Communities along a Tropical Latitudinal Gradient

General principles that shape community structure can be described based on a functional trait approach grounded on predictive models; increased attention has been paid to factors accounting for the functional diversity of species assemblages and its association with species richness along environmental gradients. We analyze here the interaction between leaf-litter ant species richness, the loc...
